Suggest Treatment For Diverticulitis
Question: I have Diverticulitis, I have to get a colonoscopy, Im scared, now that Im off the antibiotics, I am having more solid normal stools as they were different and different colors and shapes, diarhea when taking the antibiotics. But sometimes although light in color and normal sizes solid stools, I see like what looks like pieces of red in it. As if I ate a red pepper. No blood in water. At times when having a bowel movement, it feels like a cut is there as it stings a little as if I have a hemorhoid or something. I am so scared for the upcoming colonoscopy after 2 attacks of diverticulitis because of scare of colon cancer.

My thoughts:
The stinging after bowel movements is due to fissure-in-ano, can be secondary to infection you had.
I would advise you to take Sitz bath in a tub with plain warm water.
Not to strain at the time of passing bowel movements.
Since diverticulitis in infection and inflammation of the colonic diverticuli, the stool will obviously be of varied color, consistency and appearance as per the stage of the infection. Once the infection is controlled the stool will come back to normalcy. Pieces of red can be undigested food parts or small blood clots, the stool tests help in defining these better.
Diverticular disease is not known to increase the risk of cancer hence you should have any worry about the colon cancer. Since you are 50 years old, it is better to get the colonoscopy done as a routine and assessment of the colon for further management.
This will also help for knowing whether you have piles or anal fissure.
So please go ahead with colonoscopy.
