Question: I was referred for colonoscopy due to a serum calprotectin was elevated at 116. GI did upper and lower endocopy. Results: non bleeding erosions in espohagus, beginning of small intestine, 3 pre-cancerous polyps were removed (cecum , rt colon) and mild erthemia of rectum. Sent for small bowel series. The day before my lumbar fusion surgery (july 16,2015) was told i need to have small bowel series again as within 15 min of drinking the barium (chugged it right down) it was in my colon. GI is questioning a fistula from stomach to colon possibly related to Chrohn's disease (haven't been diagnosed). I had started going to a functional medicine DO that did a bunch of blood and urine tests. Many abnormalities but basically she said im not getting any nutrients out of my food along with adreal fatique and anemia. I started seeing the D.O. due to lack of bone healing for 17 months of last lumbar fusion thus the recent redo. Also diagnosed with osteoporosos this past year. MRI if abd showed atrophied pancreas that is full of small cysts (helps explain low pacreatic enzymes). I'll have the small bowel series in a couple weeks when i can lie on a hard surface. If it is a fistula - is there any treatment options? What if it isn't a fistula?

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
Read and understood your history and problems.
The reasons for changes in stomach could have been deficiency of nutrients.
The commonest cause of finding barium so soon in colon can be a fistula, which would have been seen in Colonoscopy.
Well, this will be seen in next small bowel series.
The resultant deficiencies is the root cause of all problems as you have rightly mentioned.
Barium study of colon can help to find if fistula is present or not.
I hope you are already on pancreatic enzymes and other supplements.
