Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea While Treating Colitis And Gastritis

default
Posted on Wed, 21 Jun 2017
Question: I have microscopic colitis and gastritis due to gERD. I was taking Omeprazole, now Laprazole but they are both the cause of the problem and there are no PPIs that do not cause it. Taper off steroid worked for and extra week after it was done. Now I'm back to square one. Should I get a Vagotomy? My father had one. I don't want to have diarrhea for the rest of my life. I'm only 59.

I have had a colonscopy and endoscopy last month

I had no diarrhea before this and my stools are normal after the steroids. I tried the FODMAP diet and eliminated eggs, otherwise, I just have to watch dairy and avoid garlic.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
I understand your suffering. Several PPIs produce diarrhoea but you could try out the different ones like Pantoprazole, Rabeprazole and esomeprazole and see if any of them suit you. Another option is to use Zantac 150 mg twice a day .
This along with life style changes and foods that are not acidic, devoid of caffeine, coco and spices would help. Also ensure that you go to bed on an empty stomach having had you last food and fluids at least 2 hours before bed time . Keeping the head end of your bed elevated by 6 inches or more may be helpful.
Pinaverium ( Dicetel) at 100 mg twice a day may be helpful in reducing your bowel movements.
Vagotomy, which used to be a treatment for peptic ulcer, is not a good choice as it reduces your gastric emptying and increases the gastroesophageal reflux.

Do get back to me if you have further queries.
