Question: 53 years old just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with a fasting blood sugar of 250 and A1C of 10. Dr. Prescribed Mefformin - 3 tablets of 500 mg ER to be taken before or after heaviest meal of the day. Since then I have had diarrhea and upper mid abdominal pain and very dark smelly morning urine. No real appetite. My blood sugar has been lower fasting is is about 135 and about the same 2 hours after my meal. Should these symptoms go away with time?

Brief Answer:
Suggestion

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read the message.
I think I can help you.
These are symptoms of the metformin.
However the sugar control achieved is good.
I suggest dividing the dose into one of the following

1. 500 mg before three meals- breakfast, lunch and dinner.
2. 1 gm at the heaviest meal. 500 mg at the meal that is after 12 hours from this meal.

I recommend the 1st method usually.
Monitor sugars well.
Control your diet and follow an exercise regime.

If there is any other information you need, please let me know.
Best of luck.
Dr Mittal.
