Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea And Occasional Vomiting

Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: My daughter aged 12 years is suffering from loose motions and occasional vomiting since Sunday, 31st May 2015. She had one Ciplox TZ on Sunday night after it all started and was fine by morning. However around 9:00 am she again went to the toilet and repeated this for 4-5 times on Monday during the day and night. She also had a couple of vomitings probably in the mean time when the medicines had stopped her stool. On Tuesday, she was tendered Norflox yet she has been passing loose motions for 5-6 times. Oral rehydration is going on. What can be done to prevent further motions and vomitings?

Brief Answer:
Antiemetics and ORS are to be given.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through the details and understand your concerns. But let me mention that such symptoms often occur due to viral cause where antibiotics are ineffective. Even if it is bacterial gastroenteritis, the cause is self limiting and unless associated with bloody diarrhoea, it does not need to be treated with antibiotics. Irrespective of the use of antibiotics, it should take around 5 days to recover. But if you start an antibiotic you must complete the course of 5 days. You have not done the right thing by jumping antibiotics. However, please continue the ongoing antibiotic and complete the full course.

The mainstay of treatment in such a condition is ORS or oral rehydration solution which you are already giving. Antiemetics like ondansetron will help in reducing the vomiting. The stool frequency will reduce on its own and nothing needs to be done about it. Just continue replenishing for the lost salts and fluids and your daughter would soon be fine.

Regards
