Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea And Microscopic Hematuria In An Infant

Question: HI Dr. XXXXXXX

My baby is 5 months old. She was suffering form diarrhea since last 20 days we did a stool test and it revealed presence of fertilized ascaris eggs in the stool sample. One doctor suggetsed Taxim and said we cannot give albendazol at such small age we completed the course still motions did not stop she started to even cough continously and became very irrtitable, so we consulted a XXXXXXX doctor he said we should give albendazole and cilastin sulphate there was considerable improvemnet and baby became playful again but loose motions still did not stop we repeated the stool test it showed traces of occult blood in sample, now doc gave Mebarid syrup.. please suggest if the treatment in on the right track.. i do not want any more expriments on the baby... my appologies for such a long question.

Hi....Treatment with Albendazole was appropriate. Coming to the occult blood in the stools, it is quite common when there is parasitic infestation like this with ascaris. Nothing to worry about it and no need to treat it if the baby is otherwise asymptomatic.

No need to use Mebarid syrup now.

Regarding occult blood in the stool examination, it means that blood traces in the stool are microscopic.

Unless there is XXXXXXX blood in the stools or there is low urine output or abdominal distension or green bilious vomiting you need not worry about loose stools.

Thank you for your revert doctor I just have one follow up question.. Do I need to give the baby anything to stop the motions and regain healthy gut flora?

Hi...you can use probiotics. I would prefer to use Saccharomyces boulaardii in this situation.

It comes as Econorm XXXXXXX half XXXXXXX twice a day for 5 days.
