Question: My son is taking sandoz-risperidone 1mgalong with pms-lithium carbonate 300mg and venlafaxine xr 37.5mg. he has depression and crys a lot just out of the blue, he cannot seem to control his emoption of feeling negative, our son studied medicine at XXXXXXX College in Dublin as a medical student for four years came home sick, and was to start his residency on PEI, due to being sick he could not, he is very disappopnted in himself and blaming his self and his parents because we are just common people, an we should not have had him as our birth son. The doctor has gave him these medications prescriptions yesterday. That same doctor had given him two medications prior which were not to be taken together we were notified by the hospita, that was when our son was admitted into hospital. We have told that doctor those facts for about 6 months our son has went off all medications since we talked to that doctor. Now our son has went to see him yesterday and he gave him the above named prescriptions.
Please advise if those medicationsshould be taken for depression and crying spells he has said he cannot control his emotions. We would gratefully have your opinion of these medications for his condition and is there any addictivness to these medications. I will mention he has done rotations here and knows this particular doctor and trusts him several doctors disagree with this particular doctor, and the doctor is a very negative person not a positive person to talk too. I had talked to a physcologist and she woudl like to speak with my son but he will not attend, nor go to Yoga classes, nor gym, he had always been full fo life prior to all this he was aleays an honor student, performed in many shows with a acting group name triple threats, he had received 2 scholarships to the National Ballad School Winnipeg, and the international Ballad School in XXXXXXX consecutively, he has his B.Sc. degree from University of PEI. He had a fabulous character prior to attending medical school and is very well liked by most doctors with good rapport and letters of recommendation from a great number of them as well as the Past President of the Canadian Medical Society and XXXXXXX Moyse, Chairman of the College of Physicians and surgeons for PEI. Ge actually hates himself but does and will not harm himself he has exporessed that may time to his mother and I. He does not want to hurt himself, he cannot get over the idea of he not finishing up and is still sick for this past 6 years. He is more disappointed that he got sick and is getting older 37 years old, never completed the doctorship. A doctor was his goal since being a child., but due to sickness he is still having a hard time with the fact he got sick and never finished to be in the first residency class of the PEI Government which the Premier had put him on the radar to be the the first graduated resifdent. He also feels that due to his sickness that he may not be accepted.
Your help, advice and response would be greatly appreciated. He really is a great person he recently was hired by the Federal Government, Agriculture Canada and has worked there for the past 3 months. But at home he breaks down and crys, very hard on us and my wife is 71 today and I am 70. We are having a hard time wiht this pressure and he lives at home with us which is fine it is jut the crying and his hurt is hurtting us too. Please adviseas soon as possible we want help for him, not for ourselves we are strong but as parents it is hurting us too. Thank you for your time. To mention he wants off the Island to go elsewhere to finish a career as a doctor but does not where to go that is another thing he constantly is upset about.

Brief Answer:
Depression and crying spells

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from Health Care Magic.

I have read the query in detail and I can understand your pain. He is 37 years old and is suffering from depression since last 6 years. He was a bright student with promising carrier. He was attending medical school but couldn't finish because of studies.

He has been given multiple drugs like Zypraxa, zopiclone, escitalopram, methylphenydate, concerta, abilify, epival, zydis, xanax, champix, marijuana, synthyroid, diazepam etc. but I guess no drug worked.

Now he has recently given Risperidone, Venlafaxine and Lithium Carbonate. Risperidone is an antipsychotic drug and is a good mood stabiliser. The drug is a safe drug and have good potency. The drug is comparable to zypraxa in actions.

Venlafaxine is an antidepressant drug belongs to SNRI group of anti-depressants. The drug have good efficacy and is safe with no dependence potential. The drug should work in his case.

Lithium carbonate is a mood stabiliser drug and it is also used in resistant depression. The drug is free of serious side effects but it has narrow therapeutic index. I would advise you to get his lithium levels done regularly to see proper effect of drug. Normal levels should be in 0.6-1.2 mmol/ltr. Levels can become deranged in water loss, diarrhoea etc. Taking the drug in prescribed doses doesnt result in any serious side effect. The drug is free of dependence potential.

So as per my opinion these drugs are safe and can be used without any risk. These are free of serious side effects. Don't think about negative views about doctor, if he has good rapport with that doctor he should get improvement with these medicines. The drugs are used in depression, crying spells and mood stabilisation etc symptoms.

I hope I solved your doubts, still if you have more doubts then you can ask again.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
mood stabilisers

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking again

If he has allergy (?) to lithium then other mood stabilisers can be used for proper effects. He has taken Epival which is valproic acid which is also a mood stabiliser. Other mood stabilisers are carbamazepine, oxcarbazine etc. These two drugs are also safe drugs and free of abuse potential. Oxcabrazine is even more safe and is easily tolerated. So you can consult his psychiatrist for these drugs if he doesnt tolerate lithium.

Thanks, hope this helps you. Ask again for more doubts.
