default
Posted on Thu, 8 Jun 2017
Question: Hi. My husband has had Parkinson's Disease for 23 years and Parkinson's related dementia for 4 years. When the neurologist diagnosed the dementia, she talked like anything positive for him was over. Get your lives in order, papers in order, and research nursing homes. Why exactly did she talk this way? How long before he goes to a nursing home and how much longer will be live? None of his Drs. are willing to answer this.

Continue treatment as advised and get investigated

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concern.
The disability with parkinsons can be well controlled with drugs and deep brain stimulation.
Active lifestyle is important.
Dementia is seen late in Parkinson disease and can be age related too.
Vitamin B 12 and thyroid profile should be checked.
Any other medical condition like diabetes, renal disease or liver disease may accelerate dementia.
The pace of progression depends upon these comorbid conditions and present state.
You should be in regular follow up with the neurologist.
Nursing care is required in cases with advanced stage.
Prediction of actual duration is difficult.
The survival depends upon progression and care given by family members.
Follow treatment and instructions given by treating neurologist.
Dementia medications like donepezil, memantine, rivastigmine can be added with caution.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
