Suggest Treatment For Dark And Slightly Elevated Mole On Inner Thigh Area

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: On my inner thigh near the bikini line I have had a small, dark, slightly elevated mole for as long as I can remember. I do periodically shave my bikini area and the last time was approx. 1 week ago. This evening in the shower I noticed a bump in this area. It wasn't painful or anything and I suspected it was an ingrown hair except it was very dark purple. I pressed on it and it burst and bled quite a lot. I realized then that this was actually where my mole had been. At the present time it appears to be a small red sore that no longer resembles a mole. I've never had issues with this mole whatsoever. Now, that it is a sore it is somewhat painful. I suffer from anxiety and I am now concerned that my mole that morphed into something like a blood blister is a melanoma. I plan on visiting my dermatologist as soon as possible, but that's doing nothing to assuage my current nervousness. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Most likely an ingrown hair

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I have also reviewed the Image. I understand your anxiety regarding the issue.
Most likely it was an ingrown hair which has ulcerated and looks like a sore because it was in an area where you frequently shave.
Such an acute course of events (1 or 2 days) goes against anything sinister such as a melanoma and suggests a more common cause i.e an ingrown hair
I suggest you to apply an otc topical antibacterial e.g 2% mupirocin ointment, twice daily for a week.
Of course a visit to a dermatologist will doubly assure you.

My first instinct was that was what it was. However, I'm thrown off because there was a very distinct, small, well-circumscribed mole in that spot. Additionally, I have had ingrown hairs before and they were always puss and a little blood. This was nothing but a large amount of blood. Also, this is in a crease that gets a lot of friction. Is it possible that the friction combined with the irritation from shaving caused something other than an ingrown hair? I was unable to find a hair within this palpable mass once it had burst. Can you offer any differential diagnosis? I'm worrying less because it is definitely under 6 mm in diameter.

Brief Answer:
Apply a topical antibacterial; follow up after 2-3 days

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

In ingrown hair is actually a foreign body reaction to keratin present in hair which is percieved as external and body tries to fight it of and develops inflammation around it. There may be an excessive vascular proliferative reaction and that might cause profuse bleeding. Therefore even a simple ingrown hair can bleed a lot.
I suggest you to apply a topical antibacterial e.g mupirocin or betadine. Avoid manipulation.
Another possibility is that it was a small hematoma that formed due to accumulation of blood inside an ingrown hair lesion and when it ruptured it bled profusely.
Let me know how it goes after 2-3 days.
