Suggest Treatment For Cyst On Thyroid Gland
Question: My boyfriend and I live long distance. I recently visited him last week. Two days ago a cyst grew on his thyroid gland. He went to the GP yesterday and is going to get his ultrasound this week.
Last year I came out positive on herpes hsv 1 and 2 blood test. I'm afraid that maybe I gave him the virus or agitated him by exposing him to the virus.
I went to several drs and the last one told me that those tests are not reliable and to not worry about it, but im worried that I am passing on the virus. We use protection during sex.
Can you help me? I want to make sure I am not compromising his immunity.

Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
HSV 1 and 2 can be transmitted sexually and during kissing if you are having active infection. But the relation of this with the thyroid disease is not clear. The cause of thyroid cyst may be due to a thyroid nodule which has bled or cystic change. The link between thyroid autoimmune disease (Hashimoto's disease) - which is a cause of thyroid cyst - and HSV infection is also not clearly demonstrated. So no need to worry about this. Though HSV can be transmitted it is not responsible for thyroid disease in your boyfriend.
Thyroid cysts are usually benign and no treatment is needed in majority of case. Most are non cancerous and the only reason for their removal is large size.
The investigations commonly done are thyroid function tests, ultrasound neck and needle biopsy if needed.

Could this have been detected by a GP and a normal panel of tests? Or does this kind of thing just pop up out of nowhere.

As doctors we never look at what caused the thyroid nodule as it don't have any role in management of it. We are interested whether this nodule is benign, so that we can keep it, or it is cancerous, so that we can remove it. Cystic lesions are usually benign and nothing need to be done unless it is very large ( more than 4 cm )
