Brief Answer:cause for cough should be found

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,

Thanks for the query,
Cough can be present due to 2 main reasons, allergy and infection.

Cough should be treated only after the cause is found out. There is no universal cough syrup. Cough which is due to infection should be treated with antibiotics and that due to allergy should be treated with anti histamines.

Do not give tussadryl or any other cough syrup without consulting a doctor.
Cough syrups frequently contain systemic decongestants like phenylephrine which can be dangerous and should be given only under medical supervision.

Till you see a doctor you should follow some general measures-
1) Drink plenty of warm fluids.
2) Avoid airconditioning and fan.
3) Do not drink cold foods and drinks.
4) Warm salt water gargling and steam inhalation.
5) Some voice rest.

Regards,
Dr Rajkishori Godhi.
