Suggest Treatment For Cough With Blood In Sputum

Question: Hi doc, sometimes during winter and in cold places i have observed very tiny particles of blood from my nose. Doesnt happen every day but maybe like 2-3 times a week on cold weeks. This is specially since i have moved from a warm asian country to the US. But what recently got me worried is that, i have got cough the last few days and a couple of times when i spit out cough, i saw a tiny speck of red color in the cough which i believe could be blood. This happened once yesterday and once today. The cough between these two times was normal. Also my cough situation is not severe. It is pretty moderate. The cough where i saw the blood speck was pulled from the nasal track, not the throat. Please advise. I am worried about this.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Welcome to HCM..

I've gone through your query and understand your concern..

Now what you're experiencing currently is due to change in the climatic temperature as well as humidity..dry cold weather causes the nasal mucosa get dried very fast as well as vasoconstriction, causing those mild form of blood form nose..

Don't worry about the blood specks, as they are most likely getting collected at the back of your nose as well as nasopharynx and coming out during the bouts of cough..

The first priority is to keep yourself well hydrated and keep the nasal mucosa moisturized also..

Drink plenty of water(3-3.5 ltr per day)..

Start taking steam inhalation three to four times per day, it'll help soothing the nasal mucosa..

Do not blow your nose forcefully under any circumstances as it can further worsen the scenario..

Do saline gargling twice to thrice a day..

Avoid direct exposure to cold wind, use woolen clothes/ scurf to cover your nose and mouth and breath through them..

Use paraffin and apply gently over the nostrils, it'll also help to some extent..

For the cough, again from your description it seems like excessive drying of the oro-buccal mucosa so the humidity must be maintained ..

Avoid any form of smoking/alcohol(if you do) as they'll also worsen the scenario..

Try to drink XXXXXXX water through out the day and try to keep the nose covered while sleeping at night as, during during sleep phase prolong exposure to cold also causes the nasal mucosa to dry out..

Try to get some over the counter Soothing lozenges for your throat and keep them under neath your tongue several times through out the day , it'll help ..

With all these measures, you'll get relief, so start following them up and let me know if there's any further doubts..

Let me know how you stay in the due course..

Take Care
Kind Regards
