Suggest Treatment For Cough And Runny Nose Despite Giving Cefdinir And Amoxicillin

default

Question: Hello Doctor. I don't want to be one of those parents but we have a 5 month old boy at home and he has had a cough and sometimes runny nose and eyes which feels like for weeks. He's also had a couple ear infections during this time. He has been on Cefdinir 125mg and Amoxicillin but at the end of the treatment, doesn't seem to get better. He is at daycare during the week and he's probably picking up something there however, I don't remember my 3 older boys being like this over a few week timeframe. We use a humidifier at night but it seems his cough is worse in the AM and he will typically cough so hard that his formula will come up. I keep bringing him to our pediatrician after each treatment of his Antibiotics because I feel he gets no better. I don't want to be paranoid and bring him in all the time for colds he is picking up but it just seems its taking to long to get him better.

Brief Answer:
Looks like recurrent viral illness and upper respiratory infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I understand your concern.

It is very common for kids of this age to get recurrent viral illness like this when they are in day care.

But with cough being a prominent symptom, I put forth 2 possibilities.

1. Recurrent viral upper respiratory infection.

2. Recurrent viral associated wheeze.

But a common issue with both of these possibilities is that both of them do not require antibiotics.

Unnecessary use of antibiotics will culminate in antibiotic resistance eventually.

Next time when you approach your pediatrician regarding this issue I suggest you put forth these possibilities and discuss the option of giving bronchodilator therapy rather than antibiotics.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
