Suggest Treatment For Constipation

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: For the past few months I've begun to experience constipation and sometimes take Dulcolax to ease my situation, not always successfully. Metamucil used to be a sure fire remedy, and I eat a good amount of vegetables too and eat meat lightly, rarely red. I should also mention that I'm a reasonably healthy 80 year old man who has always moved my bowels easily. My bowel movements seem otherwise normal in all respects, and I go at least two or three times daily. Having said all that, maybe I don't have a problem. Should the uncertainty of when I go be all that worrisome?

Brief Answer:
Eucarbon will be a better choice

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Irregularity in bowel movements , change in caliber of stool , increased mucus , altered color or presence of blood in stool are signs that the bowels aren't working as well as they should.

Irregularity rather that prolonged constipation requires a mild laxative that tends to keep the bowels moving. Dulcolax is quite a strong stimulant laxative and I have noticed in my clinical experience that patients tend to loose their original bowel rhythm and cant properly empty their bowels without dulcolax.

I would recommend Tab Eucarbon . It is a mild laxative and has detoxifying properties due to presence of charcoal so has added benefits. Eucarbon is also indicated in IBS ( irritable Bowel syndrome ) which is one of the possible causes for your symptoms of uncertainty w.r.t bowel movements. Eucarbon contains the following

Vegetable charcoal
Folium Sennae
Rhurab root
Essential mint oils and fennel oils

You should get a stool R/E and stool for occult blood done. Long term Diabetic patients often have trouble with irregularity in bowels , Fasting blood sugar and HBA1C should be done to look for diabetes and if detected adequate blood sugar control should be ensured. Colonoscopy every 8 to 10 years should also be on the screening chart.

Please consult your doctor before starting any medication or planning any diagnostic test.
