Question: My 22 year old son has had constipation for many years , he has had lymes disease 2 times the most recent in July. A week ago he had fresh red blood when he had a bowel movement not in it but accompanying it... Today he went maybe 5 times and there was a significant amount of fresh red blood dripping out.... No fever no pain, he has gas a lot of times during the day , which he passes frequently (this is just as hard for me to type as it is for you to read....). Slight pressure in the abdominal area....... On side note his finger nails have been purple since he took the antibiotics for lymes on July 4 of this year BUT his oxygen levels are normal as is his blood pressure and pulse. I'm just adding that to be complete in all symptoms. He is healthy otherwise college student plays tennis and just recently started jogging to get in shape after the Lymes. (The first Lymes went un diagnosed for 2 years when he was 17....

Brief Answer:
Do not panic... Please consider colonoscopy..

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand you are concerned. But since he is still active and otherwise healthy, I don't find any reasons to panic at this point of time. Yes, he does have some per rectal bleeding which cannot be ignored, but it could be related to hard stool and constipation (commonly). Encourage him to drink plenty of fluids, plenty of fibres and banana (which is considered as natural stool softner).

You should discuss about colonoscopy, a test that helps us identify bowel inflammation, polyps and other structural conditions within the bowel. A gastroenterologist are experts to perform this procedure. You may ask for a referral from your local physician.

Lyme's disease and the nail discoloration seems unrelated to me at this point of time. The doctors will be able to check for relations (if any) through detailed clinical examination.

Hope this helped. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Regards
