Question: Have been dealing with a constant cough now for a month. I have been sick and was on antibiotics and I am done with those. I also quit smoking 4 years ago as I smoked for 39 years and I am still chewing nicorette gum, but this cough is keeping me up at night and am sleep deprived.

Brief Answer:
Cough lasting for more than 2 weeks should not be neglected.

Detailed Answer:

Hello XXXX,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

Any cough lasting for more than 2 weeks should not be neglected and should be investigated.

The cough could be due to allergy/asthma or COPD. Do you have any known allergy like that to dust, smoke or anything else? do you have any breathlessness or wheez or excess acid production? If you have any of the symptoms you may take an anti allergic like montair lc and a inhaler like aerocort.

Or there could be other causes for your cough esp in view of the history of smoking and your age. Are there any associated features like fever and weight loss.

You need to undergo certain investigations like chest x ray, spirometry, sputum examination and if required a CT scan and bronchoscopy.

I suggest you consult a local pulmonologist who can examine you, get relevant investigations done and guide you regarding your treatment.

Take care.
