Brief Answer:
Chronic autoimmune disease is a probability

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
I have gone carefully through your concern.

Heterogeneous structure of the thyroid gland in ultrasound is suggestive of autoimmune disease, more probably Hashimoto thyroiditis ( causing hypothyroidism) and rarely Graves disease (causing hyperthyroidism).

Usually, Graves disease is associated with symptoms of hyperthyroidism; palpitations, sweating, insomnia, weight loss etc, while Hashimoto thyroiditis is usually asymptomatic.

So, until you have the results of the thyroid hormones, you may create an opinion rather the changes in ultrasound are due to Hashimoto or Graves disease.

Of course, the diagnosis will be confirmed by the lab investigations.

Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
