Suggest Treatment For Chills And Aches On Body, Severe Vomiting And Diarrhea

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: I woke up Friday morning with severe vomiting and severe diarrhea, chills and aches from head to toe. This lasted for approximately 9 hours. Once the vomiting and diarrhea stopped I had a severe headache that I was able to treat with Tylenol. I stayed in bed and by yesterday mid-morning my fever was gone and I felt much better. Today I've had a queasy stomach, no vomiting and no diarrhea, but my torso, neck and face are covered with a red blotchy rash and I have a mild headache. I figured that I simply had the stomach flu. The rash is not itchy, but does concern me since I have continued to be queasy although I have been able to hold food down.

Brief Answer:
viral exanthem, push fluids, tylenol

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question. It sounds like you had a severe stomach virus. Many viruses can cause a rash like you describe it is called a viral exanthem. It is caused by the immune system trying to fight off the virus. These rashes are usually benign and go away on their own in a week or so. The headache is most likely from dehydration so taking tylenol is fine but you also really want to push fluids as much as you can and avoid drinks with caffeine because they contribute to dehydration. The queasiness is common after a stomach virus and you may be able to ease it off with some pepto-bismol or mylanta. If you were to develop high fevers and severe headache then you would need to go to the Emergency department but it sounds like you will be much better in a few days. I hope so. Thank you for using HCM.
