Suggest Treatment For Chesty Cough And Coughing Up Of Green Mucus

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Nov 2016
Question: I am 69 year old male and in relatively good health (non-smoker). I've had a very deep chest cough for about 10 days. I spit up a great deal of generally green mucus--particularly near bedtime and upon rising in the morning. There is some coughing (with mucus) during the day when I'm active, but not quite so bad. I have had no fever. I do not have congestion in my head; I do not have a sore throat. I am tired, but much of that has to do with waking up in the night with a deep hacking cough and not being able to go back to sleep. I had a pneumonia shot three years ago. Two weeks ago I flew in a larger plane for about four hours to visit my young grandchildren (ages 8, 6 and 18 months--they were all well). I then flew home about four days later, again on about a four hour "closed in an airplane" flight.
Although I have taken various OTC drugs for colds (NyQuil, Muscinex, etc), they don't seem to "mask" my symptoms very long--and certainly haven't "cured" them.
My coughing and sputum do NOTseem to be decreasing since the onset about 10 days ago.
With those comments, would you consider this just your run of the mill cold or possibly pneumonia. Oh! I did have a case of walking pneumonia about three years several months AFTER I had a pneumonia shot. I've not yet had a flu shot this year, but currently I don't think I have any flu symptions (i.e., fever, chills, lack of appetite, severe headaches, etc.)

Being sick is the pits! Can you give me any suggestions of a suggested diagnosis

THANK YOU!!!!

Brief Answer:
Seems to be respiratory infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting the query on HCM. After going through your query, I would like to comments the following:

1. Your symptoms at present are suggestive of respiratory infection /Acute bronchitis.

2. You need to visit a doctor/ Pulmonologist at the earliest, get a minimum of chest X-ray and sputum examination done.

3. You probably require a course of antibiotics.

4. Also if you are getting recurrent infections, you maybe advised pulmonary function tests by your physician to rule out senile obstructive airway disease or COPD/Asthma.

I will be glad to answer follow up queries if any. Please accept my answer if you have no follow up queries.
