Suggest Treatment For Chest Pain While On Oxycodone

Posted on Sat, 24 Jun 2017
Question: Hi. I am in very, very severe pain after a fall off my computer chair Tuesday when my left rib cage struck the corner of another chair. I was in the ER and they gave me "oxycodone with acetaphenamen" (1 every 6 hours), but it isn't working. I was told this medicine is the generic for Percocet. I'm desperate for pain relief. Every movement hurts severely. My doctor won't be in until 10:30 a.m. Thursday. It is now about 4:00 a.m. Wednesday. What can I do? Can I try other medicines on top of this one, like Advil or Excedrin Migraine (which is aspirin/acetaphenamin/caffeine) which I have in the house, or extra plain Tylenol, or is that harmful on top of what I'm taking?

Brief Answer:
You can take Ibuprofen (Advil) for pain. Avoid acetaminophen

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic

Since you are already on percocet which contains acetaminophen, avoid any other medications containing acetaminophen like Tylenol as it can lead to overdosing and affect your liver.
However, you can safely take Ibuprofen (if not allergic) for pain. You can start with 200 mg every 6 hours initially. If pain is not decreasing, The dose can be increased up to 400 mg every 6 hours .

Apply ice on the area of pain and take adequate rest.

Hope I was able to help you

Thank you. I'm trying Advil and I'll see if that works. Is there anything else I can take while I'm taking Percocet also. in case Advil (Ibuprofen) doesn't work either? The pain is very severe. Is there another prescription drug that is more likely to work that I can ask my primary doctor for? (By the way, from your name I gether that you are from XXXXXXX or of XXXXXXX descent. I lived in XXXXXXX during the 1970's and my second husband was Indian). Thank you again.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Percocet is a very powerful opioid pain relieving medication. If needed, Hydrocodone, which is a less potent opioid can be added along with percocet for additional pain relief.
Another option is to discontinue percocet and start a more powerful opioid like Hydromorphone (Dilaudid).

Nice to hear that you had the opportunity to live in XXXXXXX
Hope you had a wonderful time there
wishing you good health
