default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jul 2015
Question: I went to see a surgeon because of cervical spinal stenosis, he said the spine was not being compressed enough for surgery, I explain my symtoms of neck pain, radiating down the shoulders and arms, body shakes that get really bad when I try to do anything, numbing of hands and feet, temperature rise's to the 103 mark then drops just as fast, shooting pains up into the head etc. He wants me to see a Neurologist and have a brain mri. The symptoms are getting so bad aside from sleep, laying down and the most smallest of tasks I can no longer do

Brief Answer:
Risk of serious cervical spine compression

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

I have read your query and understood your problem.

Do you have dizziness or giddiness, blurring of vision, occasional unusual sweating ?

Do you have sensitivity to light and sound when you get these headaches ?

According to the history you have provided, it appears that you could be suffering from the consequences of cervical nerve roots compression which can explain the radiating pain to the shoulder, arms and the rest of the body. Tingling and numbness are also features present in your case which go in favour of moderate to severe cervical nerve root compression.

The other possibility is Migraine headache, which typically starts in the back of the head or neck and radiates upwards towards the head or downwards to shoulders.

The fact that you have mentioned about the swinging temperature, it is possible you have disturbance in the temperature regulating mechanism of the brain. This could be due to infection anywhere in the body or problem near the Pontine area in the brain.

This is probably why your Surgeon has recommended a Neurologist, who is better trained in disorders of the brain and can help you. He would examine you and rule out Migraine disorders and other disorders of the brain which can cause similar clinical picture, with necessary investigations like a Brain CT or Brain MRI, as necessary.

I would advice you to avoid flexing for neck forwards as that could put pressure on the pinched nerves. Also avoid lifting heavy weights or lifting hands above the head for a while as this could also strain the compressed nerves. Try to get 6-8 hours of sleep. Reduce stress by deep breathing exercises and Yoga.

In my opinion, you have disabling symptoms due to possible cervical spine pathology like stenosis though your doctor doesn't feel so. Please go ahead and consult a neurologist first. Following neuro consultation, you can focus on resolving doubts about cervical spine stenosis / nerve root compression.

I can understand the pain and suffering you are going through and am empathetic towards. I will be glad to guide you better. But looks like the priority now is to assess neurological condition.

I hope I have answered your query.

Thank you for your prompt reply. The surgeon does say I have cervical spinal stenosis, but the MRI did not show much spine compression as of yet. He thinks with the symptoms i'm presenting it could be something, along with having cervical spinal stenosis. He did bring up a few times about something happening in my brain.

Hi there.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I would also concur with your Doctor of some other cause coexisting with your cervical nerve compression.

I would suggest the following remedies. Kindly do a temperature charting by noting your temperature every half an hour, so that I could understand the pattern of your fever and help figure out it's cause. Avoid consuming hot food and fluid. Wear light clothes to avoid temperature build up. Practice Yoga and relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercises, stretching exercises.

Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol. Keep away from bright lights or loud noises. Listen to soothing, relaxing music.

Kindly refer back to me whenever you please and also after to see your Neurologist.

Thanking you.

Regards,

Dr. Aashish Raghu
