Question: I am here by sending details of surgery of left knee with attached in 3 files namely history summary of 2011 , 2014 and mri scan report 2014. A loose body(cartilage) present in my left knee was removed from my left knee 3 years back orthoscopicaly. Then i had no pain for next 2-3 years. From 4-5 months i have been suffering from light pain while running or when i stress my left knee so i consulted my doctor again and he suggested me go with micro fracture treatment and performed the same to regenerate the part removed before.SO doctors please suggest me what i need to do and whether the cartilage removed will regenerate or not by the treatment given . please advise me any other precautions and tips for my faster recovery. Is there any tablets or injections available for faster regeneration of cartilage.please advise me any further treatment is required or not.And if any treatment is required kindly give information.

Brief Answer:
You can do micro fracture treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have studied your case.

You have cartilage damage due to loose body and related degeneration.
You need to continue cartilage protecting medication like chondritin sulphate [glucosamine], that you need to take for couple of months.

I will advise to do X ray knee weight bearing and repeat MRI knee can be done and if there is severe destruction of cartilage then arthroscopic shaving can be done.

Exercises will help to strengthen muscle and joint.
In lying flat supine on back – move your ankle up and down[plantar flexion dorsiflexion],keeping small towel below knee-press your patella[knee cap ] on towel and hold for 15 sec, lift your leg straight alternately [10-15 times].
Lying on your tummy- flex knee alternately, make knee rotation in flexion.
Sitting on chair- extend your legs alternately [hold in extension for 15 sec]
Standing half squat taking support of wall to back.

VISCOSUPPLEMENTATION: Hyaluronic acid injections given into the joint (especially large joints like knee joint) in prescribed dosages will give good short term pain relief in arthritic joints ranging from 1-2 years.
Newer modalities for cartilage injury include autologous chondrocyte implantation [ACI] which helps in treatment of cartilage destruction.
You can do micro fracture treatment also because it is less costly and less invasive can be done arthroscopic XXXXXXX

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Brief Answer:
There is no much role of diet for cartilage regen

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

There is no much role of diet for cartilage regeneration, but fresh fruits and vegetables have high anti oxidant property.

In arthroscopic shaving damaged cartilage is smoothened and loose friable cartilage is removed.
After micro fracture you may need proper exercises protocol and weight bearing as advised by surgeon need to be continued.

Avoiding steps and using western style toilets would be helpful.
Loose body formation can be due to disease process chondromatosis or due to inflammation.
Cartilage regeneration may take 3-4 months time.
