Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: I have currently been on Ziprasidone HCL 80 MG capsules (take one capsule by mouth twice daily w breakfast and dinner) for one week now. I have noticed that I have developed a couple of canker sores on the tip of my tongue which has made it very uncomfortable nor me to eat , drink and even talk. Do you think this could be one of the side effects of my taking this new medication?

Brief Answer:
it may be the indirect side effect of ziprasidone if no other cause found

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. I can understand your concern.

Ziprasidone can cause dry mouth in 1-5% of the patients. This dry mouth may lead to canker sore if proper hydration is not maintained. In general other causes of canker sores (nutritional deficiencies, local irritation, gastrointestinal problem, stress, food allergy) should be ruled out first. Opinion of otorhinologist (ENT specialist) or dental surgeon will help. Consult respective doctor for examination. If no cause is found and sores are specifically appeared after starting ziprasidone only, inform your psychiatrist to report this side effect as it is not a side effect of ziprasidone.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.
Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
