Suggest Treatment For Cancer Cells In The Fibroadenoma Of Breast

Question: Hi, This is XXXX. My wife is aged 50 years had undergone Total Hysterectomy for Intramural Benign Fibroids along with uneventful Fibroadenoma of breast in 2002. Later also no cancerous cells were noticed. In 2004 mammogram of breast was done and was normal. Every year she is being checked by doctor for any breast lump, etc. Last year Ultrasound was done for her breast examination along with manual breast examination by doctor and came out normal. We are taking care by undergoing routine yearly examination of breast to rule out any cancer onset as her uterus and ovaries were removed when she was just about 38-39 years. Now, my question:
1) Whenever we come across any advertisement or TV programme, doctors invariably advise to go for MAMMOGRAM YEARLY TEST. But when visited doctor last year they advised us to go for CT SCAN/ULTRASOUND and they said that it is better than Mammogram and it is enough if undergo ultrasound test and Mammogram is risky and once in 2-3 years it is OK.
2) Which test is better, Mammogram or CT/Ultrasound and is it preferable to undergo both for my wife considering the fact that total hysterectomy was done during her early age.
3) Can she undergo Mammogram test every year taking into account its radiation risk.

Brief Answer:
I suggest yearly ultrasound for your wife for screening.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX

I can understand your doubt and multiple investigations.
Combination of mammography with ultrasonography increases the sensitivity and it helps in better characterization of lesions. If any lesion is detected then both modality is used in combined(called as sono-mammography)form.
It is important to know that there may be false positive results in mammography,so ultrasound is next advised. In individual form,Ultrasound is more sensitive.

Ultrasound is initially preferred for screening in woman less the 35 years due to radiation exposure of mammography.Mammography can be done for screening in woman more than 35 years age.

Your wife had history of excision of fibroadenoma. It is a benign tumour, but she need regular follow up.
I suggest yearly ultrasound screening for your wife as it is radiation free and it is very sensitive also.

I don't suggest for CT scan for screening because it causes heavy exposure.

Hope I have answered your query.
Further queries are most welcome.

Thanks doctor. Still have small doubt. In most of the labs sono-mammography test is available. For yearly checkup is Sono-mammography or ultrasound preferable in wife's case ?
