Question: Two weeks ago I felll doing housework and took and hard fall to my shin bone on my leg, It caused a hard raised area where the hit was. Still have the hard egg lump but now I also have bruising around the lump and also now I have a bruise around my inner foot area? Is this something to be concerned about, or does it just take time. I can walk all around during the day, and I raise it every night. But it is still very tender if I touch it.
Brief Answer:
Pre-tibial Haematoma
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your question.
This is called a pre-tibial haematoma. It is a collection of blood under the skin in front of the bony part of your shin bone, i.e. tibia bone. It is very common after such an injury as you describe. The reason you have bruising around your foot is simply because the blood and swelling is dependant i.e it tracks under gravity to your foot.
The bruising and lump/swelling in the tibia will persist for sometime maybe even months although it will very gradually shrink in size. In may become a little firmer over time. It does not require any treatment unless in becomes infected which is rare. This would present as increasing pain, swelling and redness in the same region that would require surgery to drain the area and antibiotic treatment. Sometimes injudicious attempts to drain a haematoma can result in such infections.
I hope this answers your question.
Best wishes
