Suggest Treatment For Bruise On The Toe

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Jun 2016
Question: I injured my pinky toe by something metal and pointy falling on it. The bruise showed up on the inside, closest to the toe next to it. The bruise went away a couple of days later but it is still sore. I accidently pushed off of it a couple of days ago and it got sore, red and swollen on the joint. It was gently throbbing and warm like it was developing an infection. Now the redness has gone down but is a little itchy like a hystamina response. It doesn't really hurt much anymore but the joint, which is not near where the bruise was, is the area that is swollen. I'm worried there is something else going on since the bruise has been gone and the pain is almost gone but it is still pretty swollen. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Soft tissue injury to the toe

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

It sounds like you had an injury to your 5th toe. The area became swollen and red and painful. It continues to be swollen but less painful. This is just the residual soft tissue damage to the toe. Since the toe is all the way down to your foot the fluid there will take a lot longer to resolve since it is a toe and gravity tends to pool fluids to the lowest point. If you can elevate the foot more the toe will resolve more quickly. I don't think there is any infection since you did not break the skin. I would also recommend taking an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen which will also help reduce the swelling and redness

In summary
1. soft tissue damage
2. Swelling due to location
3. Elevate foot as much as possible
4. Use an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen
