Question: Hello, I am very fair skinned. I recently had a Skin Cancer Surgeon remove a severely atypical mole from my calf and had a skin graft - benign (I am so thankful to say). The Navy medical surgeon at a skin cancer surgery center looked at another mole on my thigh (I pointed out) and it was large (like a pea), light brown and a bit raised, a bit uneven - but it has has been unchanged, and there for years. He said this lesion was not one I needed to worry about (some other type mole, he said), but today I went for a checkup to a general dermatologist, and he said this lesion was different from my other typical "freckles and moles," and that I should have it ellipitcally cut out and removed (about one to one and a half inche cut) - such a difference of opinion. What should I do? He did not want to bother with a biopsy. I would greatly appreciate your opinion if you are a skin cancer specialist or dermatologist. Thank you.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately, I do not have a way to upload a photograph on my computer for you, or I definitely would - I know that would be very helpful. Since I am not able to do this, could you even please tell me if there are "other " types of brown slightly raised moles or freckles that can be harmless, and if so, what are they called? I will make a dermatology appointment on Monday with a different (good) dermatologist to get a second opinion, but in the meantime, I am wondering if every brown lesion is prone to cancer (melanoma). having another inch + incision on my leg is also something I hope to avoid if unnecessary.
