Suggest Treatment For Breathlessness And Facial Numbness While On Levaquin?

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Aug 2015
Question: My dad has been short of breath and at his 2 year lung cancer exam (stage 1 removed with lobectomy) they found inflammation and fluid on the lung. The doctor
said he thought it would clear with antibiotics and to come back in a month. Well the problem he is hypersensitive to medication and the Levaquin made his face numb. The doctor changed the medication yesterday to the Z pack. He took it last night and it also made his face numb and it is still somewhat numb. Now it is Saturday and we don't know what to do. Should he just stop the meds and wait or is facial numbness enough to warrant a trip to ER. He gets all kinds of weird side effects from medications and it makes anything difficult to treat.

Brief Answer:
MRI of face

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Since your dads face has become numb after taking Z pack i would advise you to go to the ER and do a MRI of face

Facial numbness can be caused due to damage or dysfunction of the branches of the cranial nerve supplying the face region that is trigeminal nerve due to side effect of Z pack

I would also advise you to consult a neurologist

I will try to talk him into going. What would be the
treatment if he goes. This is the third time this
has happened with antibiotics and it has always
worn off but this time it is lasting longer. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Steroid medications

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Facial numbness can be treated by steroid medications

The usual amount is one milligram per kilogram body weight of prednisone per day for 7 to 14 days

Discuss this with your treating physician

Thank you very much. He says his face is much better
but now he has another problem. He feels the area around
the lung where the fluid is may be swollen. He says it doesn't
hurt but seems inflamed. Might this be caused from
the infection or the side effects from antibiotic? (He did take another
z pack pill because he is convince the numbness came from the
Levequin that he took first.)
