Suggest Treatment For Blocked Nose, Mild Cough, Breathing Problem And Snoring

Question: Hi Doctor,
My son is 2 months 1 week old, weighs 5.6 kg and h. He is making sounds/snores while breathing. 2 weeks back he got nose blockage and we have given him Nasa clear as per doctor's advice. Then he got mild cough (may be due to phlegm formed from nasal drops) and we have given him Maxtra drops for 7 days. Cough was cured now but still he is suffering from breathing problems and snoring. This mainly observed during sleep and breast feeding. He is normal when he was placed in position when his head is placed higher. For this Pediatrician suggested both Nasa clear and NS neb but I didn't see any improvement. When we consulted the doctor on follow-up, she told that it will reduce slowly and we should not use medicines for infants.

But I am worried if this condition will prolong and will lead to some other complications as his elder brother is having asthma and mother earlier had eosinophilia.
Please suggest whether I need to consult either ENT or pulmonologist as I am not sure whom to consult. Or will it reduce slowly as the doctor suggested earlier?

Thanks for your help.

Brief Answer:
self limiting.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing to us.
The usual noisy breathing is common in infants.
Do not worry, as your doctor said , it is self limiting and will reduce i a few weeks.
If the symptoms increase , the usual saline nasal drops will not help, the nasal drops have to be changed to the one containing xlometazoline, the dosage and duration should be advised only by a doctor.
These symptoms does not suggest asthma, there is no requirement to consult any super specalization.
Mean while try reducing any thing relating to dust and smoke in the babys enviornment.
Hope I have cleared your query, regards.

Thanks Doctor for the reply.

It would be great if you can let me know whether both nasal blocking and noisy breathing are related or different.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
mild noisy breathing.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for the follow up.
The first cause of noisy breathing in an infant is due to blocked nose due to nasal mucous plug or congestion in the nose, the sound is mild in nature and not present all the time.
If the sound is really loud and present all the time and increases on activity , then other causes have to be ruled out.
It is difficult to come to a conclusion with out examining the baby.
Also watch for cough, labored breathing and wheezing sound during breathing.
If you find these symptoms , then you should go back to your ,thank you regards.
