default
Posted on Sat, 21 Jun 2014
Question: I have had diarrhea for 5 weeks, No blood, do pain, just gas, bloating and diarrhea. I have not travelled or eaten anything strange in recent months, I saw my primary care physician who did bloodwork and an abdominal Xray which was all normal, She changed my probiotic and wrote an order for a colonoscopy which I will get, but I really need relief now. Is there something I can take to ease the gurgling and gas.?The BRAT diet isn't helping.

Brief Answer:
Following remedies for bloating and diarrhea...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I am sorry for the situation you are in.

At this point, I'd suggest to:

- take probiotics as prescribed by your doctor. If you see no improvement, then, stop taking them. Some of my patients have reported aggravation of symptoms while taking probiotics.

- Take simethicone, thrice daily. You can find it as over the counter. Can ask at your local pharmacy.

- Antacids can also help improve bloating and gas

- Avoid eating gas forming foods/drinks: potato, carbonated drinks, etc.

- try to eat slowly, do not rash, try to chew up slowly to avoid too much air intake while swallowing

- try to keep moving: exercise or physical activity will help relieve gas

- The BRAT diet you are following contains: Banana (in some of my patients, banana eating is also associated with bloating and lots of gas,; so you can stop taking banana

Rice- can also cause bloating or might trigger bloating; so, I do not advise to take it although it's good for diarrhea

Applesauce and toast can improve bloating or gas; you can continue taking them

- I'd advise to observe what foods make you feel bloated and increase bowel movements (diarrhea).

At last, there are 2 main GI problems I see in your case:
- stomach problem: indigestion, getting cold or gastritis/GERD
- IBS

Colonoscopy result will determine the final diagnosis.

Hope it was of help! Let me know if I can assist you further!
