Posted on Tue, 21 Jul 2015
Question: Hello Dr. Rynne, I've recently been diagnosed with having hsv1 after having blood work done. I'm windsurfing if these blisters on my hands amd body are a symptom of the disease and if so, what can be done to prevent more occurring? currently prescribed triamcinolone 0.1% by my dermatologist. This cream has little affect during an outbreak

Brief Answer:
Need to initiate anti-viral medications at the earliest

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. From the attached images, these blisters do look like they could be due to HSV, and so the most important treatment approach at this juncture would be:

+Oral anti-viral medications: Acyclovir, valacyclovir, famciclovir, etc.
+Local aesthetic (e.g. xylocaine, dilocaine, etc.)
+Drink plenty of fluids
+Keep your sores covered with clothes
+Oral anti-inflammatory medications: Acetaminophen, tylenol, etc.

Triamcinolone can be used and can help, but only mildly. I hope you find my response helpful, please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

thank you for such a detailed response. is this normally what you would prescribe after someone has been diagnosed with hsv or only during a breakout?

Brief Answer:
My pleasure entirely

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again.

The anti-viral medications should be prescribed after a diagnosis, but the other components of the treatment regimen are usually prescribed only during a breakout.

Best wishes sir.
