Suggest Treatment For Bleeding After IUD Insertion

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Apr 2015
Question: Hi,

A little history abt me - I had PCOD, 1 tube blocked, multiple miscarriages, high thyroid for which I take thyronorm 50 daily. I have 1 child born 4 years back and delivery was c-section.

I had visited gynac this saturday to get IUD implanted. During implantation she told me that she can see some endo polyp and she took out a small lump and suggested me to get its cancer screening done (which I have already given in the lab).

She usually asked me few symptoms like heavy bleeding, spotting, irrregular periods which I answered in negative. I was only experiencing heavy bleeding during this period after which I had the IUD procedure done.

But after IUD done on Saturday, its Thursday - I still have mild bleeding with some lumps.

My questions are:
1. Why do I have bleeding after 5 days of IUD insertion
2. What are polyps and why do they occur
3. How are polyps treated and what are its implications
4. What should be my plan of action ?

Thanks in advance,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
wait for biopsy report

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs. XXXXXXX I understand your health concerns.

It is common to have slight spotting to mild bleeding after IUD insertion and will subside by itself.
It occurs due to the irritation of endometrial lining due to the presence of IUD.
Endometrial polyp is basically an overgrown endometrial lining which occurs very often in PCOD patients and in case it is a long standing problem then can harbor malignancy so its good that it was removed and sent for analysis.
Polyps have no medical treatment and have to be removed.
Your further management will depend on the biopsy report and in case it comes clear then nothing active needs to be done.
Now just wait for the bleeding to stop which can take a couple of days more and in case it still persists then visit your doctor for evaluation.
Till then take tablet tranexemic acid 500 mg thrice a day for 3 days and hopefully it will subside with this simple management.

Take care
Regards
Dr Manisha
