Suggest Treatment For Back Pain

Posted on Mon, 28 Sep 2015
Question: My 24 year old grandson has had a backache for 4-6weeks. ER says it's a muscle strain and gave him a couple pain pills that lasted 7days. They did not allviate much of the pain. He lays on a ice pack until the ice pack melts, once in a while. today on the right side by the middle of his back he has a spot about the size of my palm, that is red a little swollen and then in the middle of this spot it is a little purple shaded. The area feels thick like a pancake. the area is not hot nor is it cool to touch. Could this be a 'frost bite' type spot from the ice pack? If not, what should we do, do you think it will be better in its own soon? Thank you.
I am XXXXXXX XXXX and I give you permission to talk to my grandmother on my behalf.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
It can be frost bite.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and I think that your grand son may have developed frost bite and need to discuss this lesion with doctor. Other option is that you can click an image and send it to me. I can diagnose this better.
As far as back pain is concern he is not doing right by lying on ice as it causes more spasm and it will increase his back pain. I would recommend you hot water fomentation for back pain.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks

This morning the spot is beet red and covered with blisters. We are going to urgent care to get something so it won't get infected.

Brief Answer:
It may need surgery to clean pus or dead tissue

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If it is red and with blister then most probably it is infected also. It is better if you show it to a surgeon there as it might need cleaning of dead tissue or pus. Do not puncture those blisters. Do not apply any thing over them.
I hope this answer will be useful for you.Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks
