Question: Dear Doctor,

My 3.5 year old kid is detected with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (Autism) and has a mild symptoms of it. As per the developmental pediatric doctor whom we refer to, he cannot talk and doesnt mix with people around him. He has 3 problems - sleeping, eating and talking. All his rhymes are learnt by heart, but problem is with one on one communication.
We have started his Speech Therapy and Sensory Integration Therapy and the progress is very slow.
What else can be done for this? Why this problem comes even when we took all the precautions during delivery, gave all the vaccines, tried to talk to him daily., etc.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day
Dear Mr XXXXXXX

Being a parent myself, I understand your concern and apprehension.
Autism does not occur due to any intrauterine insult (when the baby is in the womb). It also does not occur due to any brain injury sustained during birth or delivery.
None of the vaccine preventable disease have any role in occurrence of Autism. It is a learning and communication disability which occurs due to developmental abnormality.

The child is only 3.5 years , as you have started with speech and sensory therapy it will definitely consume a lot of time.It calls for lot of patience on part of parents.

I would suggest you the following
1. Patience on part of parents
2. Continue speech and sensory integration therapy
3. Regular assessment by Child development Clinic

As the therapy has been started , have patience and follow up with Pediatrician. Do not worry things can be taken care off

Take care

Dear Doctor,

Thanks for your reply. We are doing the therapy daily without fail and have a strict schedule for the kid.

But in society, people are always asking for his hyper active behaviour and no interactions and so we are depressed and feel insecure while in public.

What can be done in order to face such humiliating behaviour from our friends and society people? Why our society doesnt accept that kids take time to learn and have their own pace and choices?

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Dear Mr XXXXXXX

Our society is made up of ignorant people:They must not be knowing what is Autism but still they would want to comment. We Indians have variety of cultures and beliefs .
The society will comment on anything and everything. If the nose of the baby is small, they will comment on it. The only way is to forgive the society for their ignorance ,ignore their arrogance and move ahead. Being a parent myself ,I understand how important a kid is and how much we love them.
So love your kid,do not worry he will be back on track. You don't have to explain anything or react to comments of the friends and society. (Remember the saying when Elephant walks boldly on the street is unaffected by dog spitting at it. Dog continues to do so and the saliva falls back on the dog and Elephant is untouched ). Be bold ,stand by your family and do not react .
Things are easy said then done ,but still have the determination and go ahead.

Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy life.

Take care

Best regards
Dr Deepak
