Suggest Treatment For Atrial Fib And Hypertension

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: Doctor, I have recently been diagnosed with atrial fib. I am 74 and a former college basketball player and have always competed in something tennis would be my favorite and prior to bilateral knee replacements I swam in XXXXXXX competition. That's the good news. The bad news is I have had some bad habits. Carried too much weight, hypertension somewhat under control and I drank excessively (mea culpa) all the while I was doing something athletically 5 or 6 days per week. When diagnosed my beta blocker prescription went up 4 fold and I was put on eliquis. I have an appointment with an electrophysiologist this week having waited 3 weeks for an appointment. (no big deal) SOO, here is my question: is it possible with a dramatic life style "modification" for the electric issues can stop without ablation electro conversion etc.? No drinking, weight loss continued physical activity and so on. Thank you, XXXX

Brief Answer:
In some cases electrical cardioversion also can be very effective

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

If it is your first episode of atrial fibrillation, there is a chance that with electrical cardioversion and lifestyle changes you can restore and keep sinus rhythm.
For my patients when they have their first and second episodes of atrial fibrillation I try electrical cardioversion alomg with medical therapy and lifestyle changes, if it doesn't work, then I send them for ablation. It is more effective especially when the left atria is not dilated on echocardiography.

Hope I could help you

Wishing you good health
