Question: my son is 36 for the last 4 weeks he has been treated with 4 different antibiotics, nothing seems to be knocking out whatever is going on,he does have allergies and asthma has since he was young but nothing like this, they have done all kinds of heart tests and that's not causing his problem. He gets out in the air and he says its hard for him to breath and he feels tightness in his chest, they did and allergy test on him and of course the trees and grass were high, but you would think a month of not being exposed to much outside air his body would have started to rid itself of the allergins. any sugestions would greatly be appreciated

Brief Answer:
Better to start antihistamine ,inhaled bronchodilators and ICS.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Uncontrolled allergies cause inflammatory reaction in airways. And hence airway edema, secretions etc are seen.
If this is not controlled timely than infection is inevitable.
And this infection actually worsens asthma further.
So despite of not exposing to allergen, he is still symptomatic.
Best treatment in such cases is inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).
These will surely improve him.

It would also be worthwhile to get chest Xray along with sputum culture while he is symptomatic. This will rule out any concurrent / supersided infections. Discuss about these options with his pulmonologist

Hope this helped. Wishing good health to your son.

Thanks

thank you so much for your quick response.Do you think this is all asthma related,he is in the lawn care business and this has never happened this bad,was always able to take otc medicine to get relief. When they did the allergy test on him as stated before the grass was high, they are giving him allergy shots and singulair which the shots concern me and they have also told him he can no longer keep his present occupation.Given his prior tolerance to the allergins he has encounter over the years I find that hard to swallow but am quite concerned that nothing has helped so far. What are your thoughts. I will have him speak to his dr concerning another antihistamine and the other two u mentioned. Any input will be greatly appreciated

Brief Answer:
His current symptoms are mostly due to worsening of underlying asthma.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Yes, in my opinion, his current symptoms are mostly due to worsening of underlying asthma.
According to the guidelines, first line treatment for asthma (maintenance) is inhaled treatment consisting inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).
Singular is having montelukast. It is anti allergic drug. Singular and immunotherapy (allergy shots) are add on treatment. They should be started as first line treatment. They should be given if patient is not controlled by inhaled treatment.
So in my opinion, you should consult pulmonologist for him.
Get done PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) with reversibility. First diagnose himself and than start appropriate treatment.
Hope I have solved your query.
