Question: I am suffering from severe joint pains related to chikungunya for the last two months. Very few NSAIDs seems to bring relief. Out of Voveran SR and Combiflam, which one is recommended and for how long can I have without side effects?

Brief Answer:
Take safer analgesics

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the query.

Chikungunya related arthritic joint pains usually last for 3-6 months depending upon the immunity and the calcium content of the bones.

If your immunity is good enough and if the calcium content in the bones is optimum, then within 3 months the pain will subside.

From your history your bones seem to be weak,so its taking a while for your body to come out of the arthritic symptoms.

Out of Voveran SR and Combiflam, none is safer and its better to avoid taking them for longer periods of time due to their potent harmful side effect on kidneys and liver.

Take calcium tablets daily-500mg once a day for 1 month along with vitamin and protein suplements. This will boost up your immunity and gradually help you recover.Maintain good hydration by drinking plenty of water and fruit juices.

Application of local analgesic sprays, gel and hot fomentation will help relieve mild pain. Oral analgesics should be avoided as far as possible and should be used only if the pain is unbearable.

Tramadol, etodolac, piroxicam and paracetamol are good analgesics with minimum side effects and can be used for longer periods of time.
You can take them even for 2-3 months at a stretch, but try and avoid as far as possible.

Try using ayurvedic analgesic tablets like arnopen or sallaki MR.

I hope the answer was useful.

Thank you once again.

Thank you, doctor. As a matter of fact, I have been taking Calcium for the last few years and Vit B12 and C for the last 2 months i.e. since I got chikungunya.

Most days my pain is so bad that I can't do my household chores (due to painful wrists and fingers) or walk properly (due to painful knees and ankle). I had also tried Patanjali's tulsi and giloy. So, fomentation and sprays are usually not enough to tackle the pain. I will try the ayurvedic medicines recommended by you. Can they be had for longer duration?

Thank you. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Two more questions please.

1. I've got Arnopen. What is the dosage and should it be had before or after meals?

2. Should I stop taking Patanjali's tulsi and giloy?

Thank you.
