Suggest Treatment For Anxiety, Body And Leg Pain And Pelvic Discomfort Before Menstruation

Question: I am a 40 you old woman with 4 children. Through nursing and pregnqncy I rarely got my period for 12 years. Last fall October 2013....I started getting back my cycles. My toddler is still nursing now but not enough to stop my periods.
It has been awful since getting it back. I have terrible anxiety before my periods.
I also get a lot of body aches the week before. My knees to my feet ache for a week before my period. Is this normal?
I currently have pms and I'm achy anxious with mild pelvic discomfort. I have always had very long cycles since I was 13....and I continue to now. Since I got my period back my cycles have ranged from 31-36days. However this month I am on day 38 or 39 I have had pms symptoms for the last 5 days but no period. I took a pregnancy test yesterday and it was negative. I have some pink /red discharge upon inserting tampon but no flow. I feel like it's about to start and wont.
Some other factors I am still nursing some and I had a stomach virus mid cycle this Month. I also stopped my multivitamin at that time (my family Dr suggested this to get my stomach back to normal because they contained iron).
What is going on? Is there anything I can do to get it started? I feel so miserable during pms. Is there anything I can do about the anxiety and leg aches? XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Period can be delayed due to hormonal imbalance or peri menopause.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

I can understand your concern.

I have gone through your history and in my opinion your period may be delayed due to hormonal imbalance and perimenopause.

As a rule, you should rule out pregnancy first if you missed your period and pass for a home urine pregnancy test after 7 days of your missed period date. (To rule out false negative).

There are other causes also for your delayed menses like stress, breastfeeding, anemia and multivitamin tablets.

Your leg pain can be due to iron and calcium deficiency because you are 40 yrs. Female and still a nursing mother.

Advices to relieve your symptoms-

-Do not take any stress because it may further delay your period and perform some yoga and meditation.
-To relieve your PMS symptoms you should adopt healthy and balanced diet, rich in fruits and vegetables.
-Add milk product in your diet in a form of curd.
-Do some regular exercise to sustain weight
-You can consult your treating physician for hormonal supplementation because at your age these symptoms and anxiety may be due to hormonal imbalance.

Hope it is helpful, feel free to ask more.

Regards

Thank you. I thought about that but my mom and aunts didn't go through menopause until their 50s. My 5 2 years old aunts still gets her period.

I do exercise alot. I run 25 miles a week and have for years. I am a normal weight. I did also develop an anxiety disorder in the last year.

I was taking a multivitamin with iron for lactating women. I temporarily stopped it 2 weeks ago. Should I resume it? My symptoms are not different from when I was taking it.

Also what kind of hormonal supplementation should I look into? My thyroid was checked last year and it was normal.

Brief Answer:
Natural progesterone supplementation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Sorry for the delay in my response!

Here are the answer of your question-

-It can be due to perimenopause( it is the stage 4-5 yrs. before menopause) because perimenopause start as early as 30 yrs. and as late as 40 yrs.
You can achieve menopause after that it can be as early as 45 to as late as 55yrs. of age.
- Usually during perimenopause every women thinking that her estrogen level is decreasing but actually her progesterone level is decreasing, so natural progesterone supplement or low dose hormone pills are effective in treating your symptoms.
- You can break your multivitamin for a month and restart after that as you said you had stomach trouble.
- You can take diet which can supplement these vitamins requirement.
-You can take omega-3 fatty acid( found in fish oil) and magnesium and zinc( found in fresh vegetables and fruits)
- Take low salt and low sugar diet, cut off the intake of caffeine ( this is helpful in keeping you calm).
- For anxiety disorder you can consult your doctor because during this stage due to hormonal changes your symptoms get worse.

Hope it is clear, if no further questions, kindly close the discussion and please accept my answer before closing( if you are satisfied).

Thanks
