Brief Answer:
bacterial infection, post nasal drip most likely cause

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The most common causes for acute throat pain are viral infection, bacterial infection, post nasal drip, severe reflux, trauma to the throat.

If there is no history of trauma or severe reflux then the other causes would need to be considered.

Since the pain has been ongoing for a week then either bacterial infection or post nasal drip would be most likely.
A viral infection of the throat would not normally be still severe after a week of symptoms, in most there is some improvement after a few days.

If it is related to bacterial infection then you would need a course of antibiotics. This can be identified when your throat is examined.

In addition the antibiotics which would need to be prescribed by your doctor, you would also need: (1)oral pain killers such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen

(2)oral gargles or sprays such as chloroseptic or covonia. These contain both medication to numb/reduce pain in the throat along with an antiseptic

Summary: (1) post nasal drip or bacterial infection most likely after a week of symptoms
(2)if bacterial infection then you need a course of antibiotics
(3)oral pain killers and oral gargles/sprays would also help

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
