Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: I woke up with back pain two mornings ago for no reason. I have never had trouble with my lower back, hip, knees etc. The pain spread down my left leg,to behind my kneecap and down in to my heel. It also went in to my shoulder and hip.

The tramadal we had improved me a lot so I could get out of bed and walk yesterday. The pain went from 10 to a 5. I took my last dose 7 hours ago and now I can barely walk again and the bad pain is behind my knee and heel and into my shoulder.

What is wrong? XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Likely herniated disc disease.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

The most common cause of acute back pain is herniated disc disease.

Other possible causes include spondylosis, spondylolysthesis etc.

Conservative treatment is a feasible first course of action to treat the symptoms of first-onset degenerative and herniated spine disease. Treatment modalities range from anti-inflammatory therapy ( ibuprofen for example ) to exercises designed to increase muscle strength and relieve joint loading.

Physical activity, weights, sports, may worsen the symptoms, so, is better to rest for some days.

Imaging studies such MRI and x-rays of your lumbosacral spine are necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

Discuss with your primary care Doctor about these issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings.
