Question: i am a male, early forties and have had acne scars for last 15 years (some came very late in my 20s and left deep scars then). Some are deeper and some are like dots. After having done 2 subcissions on some scars, and some laser treamtmentson some of the other, they have become less pronounced but i did not finish the process. Can you recommend the best permanant solution as I m working and cant take much time off for these treatments

Brief Answer:
Microneedling and Dermabrasion

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

I have gone through your query I have understood it.
I agree Laser treatment for acne scars has a lot of downtime which is sometimes difficult to accommodate.

Acne scars can be of various types either rolling type, boxcar type Or icepick scars.
Rolling type of acne scars have smooth sloping edges; boxcar scars are shallow but wide scars with sharp edges; ice pick scars are basically pits.

The best procedure for a particular type of acne scars depends on the type of acne scars. Therefore in an individual with different type of acne scars different procedures may be combined to achieve best possible results.
Certain type of procedures are better suited for a particular type of acne scar e.g Rolling type of acne scars are better treated with Fractional Co 2 Laser, Dermaroller Or Microneedling, subcision etc.
Box car scars improve with Dermabrasion, subcision, Fractional Co 2 Laser, punch excision with elevation etc.
Ice pick scars are the most difficult and can be made to improve with either punch excision and primary closure Or punch excision and grafting.

Of course, it may not be possible for everyone to undergo Laser, subcision, punch excision etc because of time constraints as these procedures may require to take off from work for a week or more. Therefore in my view, Microneedling and Dermabrasion sessions would be suitable alternatives for you because the downtime is just 24 -36 hours and you can take it as a weekend treatment.

The number of sessions that would be required would depend on the severity of acne scars and would be decided by your doctor. You can inquire more about these procedures from your treating dermatologist.

Brief Answer:
Acne scars

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Yes, both of these are procedures commonly done for acne scars.
The extent of improvement would depend on the severity and type of acne scars and the number of sessions. Your doctor will decide on the number of sessions you would require.
Broadly, together these procedures are effective in rolling type and boxcar type of acne scars but not so much for icepick scars.
For icepick scars, punch excision and primary closure; punch grafting are usually recommended.
