Suggest Treatment For A Torn Intercostal Muscle

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: I think I've either strained or torn an intercostal muscle on my right side just below my breast. X-rays do not show any rib damage but the pain is unbearable. When I flex my chest muscles for any reason the pain is incredible. This was a result of a forward fall on (outside) railroad ties. My body twisted when I fell and landed
facing forward against a RR tie and a rock of approximately 14 inches in diameter. It seems the best position is sitting to avoid pain. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Muscle tear likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the chest muscles that you have is likely to be due to muscle tear. Since the X-ray is normal, any bone injury is ruled out. You need to complete rest and avoid all painful movements. Taking oral muscle relaxants and doing a hot compress in the area will help in healing. You can use a chest belt of appropriate size for proper relief from pain.
I hope this answers your query.
