Surgical management of Zenkers diverticulum is considered safe and effective and is recommended for any symptomatic diverticulum. Considering statistics,there is possibility of recurrence after surgery,around 6%, complication rate is low and mostly limited to minor ones,such as wound infection, temporary swallow difficulties or throat discomfort. Serious complications are sporadic.
Surgical repair is in most cases permanent solution and additional procedures are not required. Esophageal stenosis may be late complication but is is managed by dilatation and it doesn't cause serious digestive problems.
