default
Posted on Sat, 9 Jul 2016
Question: Hi. I was diagnosed with ureaplasma parvum. I was prescribed doxyciclin for 2 weeks and symptoms persisted so then i was given azithromicin. I did a follow up test 3 days after i finished the antibiotic and it came negative however my symptoms are returning. Coul the test be false negative? Do i need a longer course antibiotic or a different on? Is there a chance the ureaplasma might not be treated ever?

Brief Answer:
Repeated tests and treatment is required, what symptoms do you have now?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concern.

It is true that it is not enough to eradicate ureaplasma infection with one or two courses of antibiotics.

Repeated tests are required even if you do not have any symptom.

For the moment, you are reporting to have the same symptoms, can you please specify them in details to assist you further and more specifically?

Waiting for your reply.

Dear Dr Sejdini,

Thank you for your reply. The symptoms i am experiencing at the moment are itchiness and since yesterday my left lymph node became inflameted and painful. Is it possible that the PCR test was false negative because i did it only 3 days after i completed my antibiotic tratment and the symptoms are because the ireaplasma is still there? I will repeat the test but it takes days for the result to come and I am honestly freaking out. The doctor can not find anything else wrong with me. Thabk you

Brief Answer:
Candida co-infection should be ruled out too....

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

I am sorry to know these fastidious symptoms have come back.

Now, usually we do recommend to repeat testing 3 days or 10 days after completing the antibiotic treatment.

I usually recommend my patients to repeat testing 10 days after completing antibiotic treatment to ensure everything is ok.

However, as the symptoms have turned back, should repeat again. There is nothing to freak out. To my opinion, you should talk to your physician and ask to get treated until you get the test results.

With regards to itchiness, apart ureaplasma infection, I suggest to get further examined for fungal infection. Sometimes, antibiotic treatment is often associated with candida infection.

Hope it helped!
