Suggest Treatment For UTI

Question: I have a UTI that was not responding the Macrobid, so the doctor put me on Cephalexin 500 MG. I picked up the prescription yesterday evening and noticed that there are 40 pills in the bottle and the instructions indicate that I should take one capsule twice per day. I called the doctor (at CareNow) to verify that I will be taking the med for 20 days and the nurse responded that I should actually be taking two tablets twice per day. Is that the appropriate does for this medication? all of the dosing information that I find indicates that it should be 250mg 4 times per day or 500mg 2 times per day.

Brief Answer:
dose of cephalexin range from 1g to 2 g per day

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthcareMagic .

Usually cephalexin dose is as you said 250mg 4 times a day or 500mg twice daily. In some severe infection the dose may be increased upto 2g per day. But it should be 500mg 4 times a day instead of 1000 mg twice daily.

This becomes over dose. I suggest you to reconfirm from your doctor the dosage and whether you have so severe UTI which needs double dose of antibiotics. If not done already get urine culture done.

Hope I have answered your query . If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Thank you for your response. I spoke to the pharmacist and she indicated that it should be 500mg twice daily. I have not heard back from the nurse at Carenow.

I have an additional questions. I took my third dose last night and have since felt soreness in my lower back. It is not painful if I "hit" it, cough, or run. It feels like it could possibly be my lower back muscles, but I am worried that it could be my kidneys. I do not have a fever, sweats, or anything else, only the sore sensation. Does this seem like a typical side effect? It is not listed on the bottle.

Brief Answer:
could be

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The lower back muscle soreness could be due to cephalexin. It is common to have weakness and soreness.

Don't worry it is not due to kidney problem as kidney pain will be localised above not at lower back and also nature of pain will be either sharp or colicky type not soreness.

Continue taking cephalexin . Soreness is mild side effect which doesn't needs stoppage of drug.

Hope I have answered your query . If any further queries are there I would love to help.
