Question: Hi
I am 18 weeks pregnant. I started having flu symptoms on wednesday (fever of 100.8, coughing, tiredness). I started taking Paracetamol, vozet and a coughing depressant. Fever used to go down for 6 hrs post taking the paracetamol and then come back. On saturday, the fever went away and came back on sunday. i went again for a CBC and swine flu test. Cbc showed everything normal and i got H1N1 positive. i immidietely started on tamiflu on tuesday. Since last 3 days i havent had any fever, only coughing is there and minor pain in my glands and ear.
My question is,
how can i know if i can still develop complications or not? did i pass the risky zone
am i still contagious? (its already 7 days now since first symptom)
Other Info:
- SPo2 is 98-99%
- Heart rate is normal
- Coughing is once every half an hour. Very tiny amounts of yellow mucus coming out when i cough sometime
- I can take deep breath without any issues
- Appetite is good
- I have some pain in my stomach 4/10

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

I read your query and I understand your concerns about H1N1 in pregnancy.

Following is my reply:

1) You have passed the risky zone but you are still contageous to others.

2) Please stay away from outdoors and wear a mask for next 4 days. A total of 7 days should be considered good enough quarantine period.

3) Pain in stomach could be due to gastritis. Please take an antacid available over the counter.

4) I dont think there should be complications since you are showing improvement.

5)Your other parameters appear good and no need to worry.

I hope I answered your query. I will be available for any follow up query you have.

Regards,

Thank you for the elaborate reply. I have a few more concerns:

1- When shall i expect the cough to go away?
2- My pregnancy used to be a normal pregnancy. After going thru this swine flu, will my pregnancy be now considered a high risk?
3- Any precautions/tests need to be done to check if any harm was done to the fetus?
4- My husband was with me during the first 5 days before we knew about the swine flu. Shall he take any precautionary medicine or take the swine flu test? he is not showing any symptoms at the moment

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Please get anomaly scan done

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

1) Cough will reduce in one week but might take about a month to go away completely.

2) Yes. Pregnancy is high risk. These Tamiflu belongs Category C medicine in pregnancy. Meaning there is possible risk.

3) No tests or precautions required now. Please get anomaly scan done at 20 weeks and repeat it again at 24 weeks.

4) It is better your husband also takes prophylactic medicines though no symptoms.
