Question: I was suspected of having Graves disease and was recommended to take PTU which I refused, because of some of its effects that i did not want to risk incurring. At the time of the first consultation the endochrinologist sent me for blood tests that showed my TH levels to be zero and T3 T4 30% high. However one month later , witout taking any medication my T3 T4 were within normal range but TH still zero. The specialist said it must have been thyroiditus and i am due to see him again in 2 months. The thy will take sometime to normalise. However, my normal weight, all my lifei am 76) has beenh 60 kgs until five weeks ago and I am now just 52kgs and look like a skeleton. AQny clus?

Brief Answer: Elevated Thyroid hormone causes weight loss Detailed Answer: Hi Welcome to Healthcare-Magic Greetings of the day Dear Mr XXXXXXX At the age of 76 years its less likely to be Grave's disease, which usually occurs at 30 to 40 years of age and is also associated with eye changes and signs. The likely cause of elevated Thyroid hormone is inflammation of Thyroid known as Thyroiditis, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is more likely cause. Diagnosis depends on 1. Typical Ultrasound picture 2. Elevated anti-microsomal antibodies 3. Fine needle aspiration cytology Eleavted Thyroid hormone increases basal metabolic rate(BMR) of every cell in the body. Elevated BMR leads to increased energy consumption. So weight loss is inevitable. There is weight loss in spite of having good appetite. Use of antithyroid drug like Propyl-Thiouracil(PTU) is definitely indicated to not only reduce Thyroid hormone level but also to get back TSH within normal limits.
