Question: Hi my son is 11 weeks and 3 days to be exact, he was diagonsed with a milk protein allergy and has been on Alimentum formula for over a month now... he has frequent sometimes large dark green diarrhea-like stools with foul smell after eating, i think he's having abdominal discomfort as sometimes he draws up his legs, when he moves his bowels he grunts and makes noises, and the poop is loud when it comes out. He also has GERD and was put on baby zantac which I read could cause diarrhea and rash as possible side effects...he started the Zantac around the same time as the Alimentum. He developed a rash coincidentally after he had a few vaccines his rash has changed in character several times over the past 2 weeks and now appears like ecxema reddened /inflamed patches of skin very dry and itchy.. when the ped first saw his rash (small red bumps over legs, trunk, arms and face) low-grade fever she said it was viral with some ezcema on his face, my boy had such beautiful soft clear skin before that. SO my question is... could his body still be reacting to the milk protein in the Alimentum?? given his poop/and skin changes not going away etc.
He has been gaining weight and wants to eat alot...however sometimes fussy and irritable. His poop yesterday and so far today is green and slightly more creamy in texture but looks shiny...he has no fever, Hope you can help.

Brief Answer:
not a serious issue.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, thanks for posting in healthcaremagic. I am a neonatologist and will help you with your issues.

Firstly , I want to mention that if the child is gaining weight normally you dont have to worry much.

It would have been best if your child could be exclusively breast fed. Babies are never allergic to mother's milk. Of the available formulas you can also try zerolac. Green and loose stool are common in formula fed babies. Improper constitution of the formula can increase the problem. Always add 1 scoop to 30 ml water and maintain this ratio. Greenish colour occurs due to increased peristalsis leading to bile colour stool which is not a problem.

Dont use zantac, use nexpro granules half of the XXXXXXX once daily in the morning for 1month after discussing with his doctor. This will help.

Lastly again I would suggest you to breast feed the baby.

As for skin problem use dermadew cream.

Hope this helps.
