Question: Hi, I went to the doctor earlier this week about vaginal burning and she diagnosed me with a yeast infection. I had to take a pill and I am currently using cream she prescribed me for it starting Wednesday. However, I still feel the burning sensation today and it does not feel like its getting any better. It feels inflamed and sore. I am also not getting any cottage cheese like discharge but instead a more egg yolk kind every 6 hours. Do yeast infections take long to heal or should I return to the doctor today to get it looked at?

Brief Answer:
GIVE IT 4 DAYS MORE

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Well, yeast infections can take upto a week sometimes to heal.
ANd it has been 3 days yet.
Give yourself 3 more days, and if it is has not gotten any better, consult your doctor again.
Meanwhile have protected sex.
Also, avoid using any gels, soaps, douches, cleansers etc to clean.
Just use lukewarm water to clean.
All the best

Okay I will give it a few more days thank you for your time. If it doesn't clear up how would I distinguish it from a yeast infection or a UTI? Are there any over the counter remedies for a UTI?

Brief Answer:
BEST TO TEST AND THEN TREAT, NOT OTC.

Detailed Answer:
THank you for the appreciation.
I think the doctor diagnosed a yeast infection.
It is extremely unwise to take OTC treatment for either a vaginal infection or a UTI, if it fails you land up with resistant infections.
YEast infections should always be diagnosed by a doctor before initiating treatment, preferably having performed a vaginal swab.
For a UTI, a complete urine exam - routine microscopy plus urine culture is a must to confirm and treat the UTI based on culture results.
Take care.
