Posted on Mon, 8 Sep 2014
Question: I was handling zinnia and green bean plants two days ago and now have a blistering rash on my arms. I've never had this reaction before and don't know which might be the cause and how to treat it. I just realized that I was also weeding parsnips, and think they might bee the answer to the rash. How should I treat it?

Brief Answer:
Cold wet cloth over the region, do not burst them

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help.

You could be quite right. Dealing with parsnips can at times give what we call a non-allergic dermatitis and present as symptoms of a burn would, with the appearance of blisters as well. There are certain chemicals present in parsnips which with the help of sunlight can cause a reaction to the human skin.

As you have already presented with blisters, keep a cold wet cloth on the region for a while. I would mainly advice you not to try and burst them for as long as possible. I can understand this might be a little inconvenient and even painful at times, but please try not to burst them and if at all they do burst then do not peel off the skin over the blistering area.

You can use a topical steroid which will help relieve symptoms of pain, swelling and discomfort. And a topical antibiotic on the affected region, along with keeping it clean and dry.

Other than the above mentioned suggestions, nothing else should be required. Of course ma'am, avoid exposure completely, but I am sure you know this.

I hope you find my response helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.
